Basic Care Requirements of African Cichlids
African cichlids bring remarkable color and behavior to an aquarium, but they do not all need the same setup. This guide covers the basics for African Rift Lake cichlids. Choose your species before planning the tank, its companions, and their diet.
African Cichlid Habitat
Rock-dwelling cichlids need secure rockwork and retreats, while open-water species need swimming room. African shell-dwellers are a particular group that uses empty shells, not a nickname for all African cichlids. Many cichlids dig, so secure decorations and plan around that behavior.
Tank size depends on the species, adult size, temperament, and number of fish you plan to keep. Swimming length and floor space matter, not just gallons. Plan for the adults your juveniles will become; adding more filtration does not replace swimming room.
Water Quality and Filtration
Use a fully cycled aquarium with dependable filtration, aeration, and a heater. Rift Lake cichlids generally need hard, alkaline water, but check the requirements of your particular species. Keep conditions stable rather than chasing one exact pH. Test ammonia and nitrite, which should be zero, and monitor nitrate. Base regular partial water changes on those tests and your stocking level, and treat replacement tap water for chlorine and chloramine.
African Cichlid Diet
Choose food for the fish you keep. Algae-grazing mbuna and species that eat more animal prey do not have identical dietary needs. Use an appropriate flake or pellet as the foundation rather than assuming every cichlid should receive the same foods.
Feed only as much as they will eat in about a minute. Start with small portions, watch them eat, and remove uneaten food. Food left accumulating in the tank is a reason to reduce the portion, not add more.
African Cichlid Breeding
Many Malawi cichlids are maternal mouthbrooders: the female carries eggs and developing fry before releasing them. Other African cichlids spawn in shells or caves. Breeding behavior, sex ratios, and the best way to protect a holding female or fry depend on the species and setup.
African Cichlid Compatibility
African Rift Lake cichlids can be territorial, especially when breeding. Match tankmates by adult size, temperament, diet, and water requirements. Stocking density is one part of managing aggression, not a guarantee of peace or a substitute for sufficient space and filtration. Watch for persistent chasing, injury, or fish being prevented from eating, and have a way to separate fish when necessary.
