Description
Lepidiolamprologus attenuatus is a sleek, highly intelligent Lake Tanganyika cichlid prized for its predatory finesse, sharp patterning, and fascinating behavior. Native to the rocky shorelines and shell-strewn zones of Lake Tanganyika, this species is a classic example of lamprologine specialization—built for ambush, precision, and territorial control rather than brute aggression.
Unlike many larger Tanganyikan predators, L. attenuatus maintains a refined, elongated body profile that allows it to maneuver effortlessly through rock crevices and shell beds. Its subtle striping, metallic sheen, and alert posture give it a distinctly “engineered” look that appeals to advanced aquarists who appreciate behavior as much as appearance.
Behavior & Temperament
Lepidiolamprologus attenuatus is a calculated micro-predator, feeding primarily on small fish and invertebrates in the wild. In the aquarium, it is territorial but not chaotic—aggression is purposeful, controlled, and situational. This makes it an excellent candidate for structured Tanganyikan communities, especially when paired with similarly sized, confident species.
Breeding pairs form strong bonds and will aggressively defend their chosen territory, often utilizing caves or shells as spawning sites. Watching a bonded pair coordinate defense and brood care is one of the highlights of keeping this species.
Aquarium Requirements
- Tank Size: 40 gallons minimum (larger recommended for pairs or communities)
- Water Parameters:
- pH: 8.0–9.0
- Hardness: Hard to very hard
- Temperature: 75–80°F
- Aquascape: Rockwork, caves, shells, and broken sightlines are essential
- Diet: High-quality carnivore pellets, frozen krill, mysis, brine shrimp, and occasional live foods
Compatibility
Best kept with other Lake Tanganyika species that can hold their ground, such as robust lamprologines or open-water cichlids. Avoid very small fish or timid species, which may be viewed as prey. Not suitable for community tanks outside of Tanganyikan setups.
Why Choose Lepidiolamprologus attenuatus?
- Distinctive predator morphology without excessive size
- Intelligent, engaging behavior
- Excellent breeding and pair-bond dynamics
- Ideal for advanced and intermediate Tanganyika enthusiasts
If you’re looking to build a true Lake Tanganyika biotope with depth, tension, and natural hierarchy, Lepidiolamprologus attenuatus is a standout species that rewards thoughtful tank design and careful stocking.
