Description
Introduction: The Tomato Hap Cichlid (Haplochromis sp. 35) is a striking addition to the cichlid family, bringing a splash of color to the freshwater aquarium. This species is not just a visual delight but also an interesting fish to observe and care for.
Physical Appearance: The most notable feature of the Tomato Hap is its vivid red color, predominantly seen in males, which can intensify with maturity and during breeding. Females and juveniles are generally more subdued in color, exhibiting paler hues.
Natural Habitat and Care: Originating from Lake Victoria, the Tomato Hap prefers environments that mimic the sandy and rocky substrates of their natural habitat. They thrive in well-oxygenated water with a pH between 7.2 and 8.6, and temperatures ranging from 74°F to 82°F.
Behavior and Tank Mates: Tomato Haps are relatively peaceful but can be territorial, especially males. They do well in a community tank with other similarly sized and tempered fish. Ensuring enough space and hiding spots can reduce potential aggression.
Diet: In the wild, they feed on a variety of small invertebrates. In captivity, a balanced diet including vegetables and protein-rich foods will keep them healthy and maintain their color vibrancy.
Breeding: Like many African cichlids, Tomato Haps are mouthbrooders. Females take care of the fertilized eggs and fry by carrying them in their mouths until they are ready to swim freely.
