Description

The Syncrossus hymenophysa, or tiger loach.
Reaching up to 9 inches in length, it exhibits a vibrant pattern that differentiates it from close relatives like S. helodes, particularly in the orientation of its dorsal stripes. Native to the dynamic environments of Malaysia, Borneo, and Sumatra, the tiger loach prefers soft substrates and the shelter of submerged structures. In captivity, it requires specific water conditions—neutral to slightly acidic pH and warm temperatures—to thrive. The tiger loach is a social fish and is best kept in larger groups of 3 or more to establish a social hierarchy, provided the aquarium space is sufficient to mitigate its dominant tendencies.
