Description

The Syncrossus hymenophysa, or tiger loach, stands out in the aquatic world with its striking appearance and notable aggression, especially during feeding. Reaching up to 10 inches in length, it exhibits a vibrant pattern that differentiates it from close relatives like S. helodes, particularly in the orientation of its dorsal stripes. Native to the dynamic environments of Malaysia, Borneo, and Sumatra, the tiger loach prefers soft substrates and the shelter of submerged structures. In captivity, it requires specific water conditions—neutral to slightly acidic pH and warm temperatures—to thrive. Notoriously territorial, the tiger loach is best kept singly or in larger groups to establish a social hierarchy, provided the aquarium space is sufficient to mitigate its dominant tendencies.
