Blue Otter Hap

Description

The Blue Otter Hap (Placidochromis sp. “Blue Otter”) is a beautiful and somewhat uncommon haplochromine cichlid from the deep rocky regions of Lake Malawi. Adult males develop an intense electric-blue coloration that can cover the entire body, creating a stunning display under proper lighting. Females and juveniles are typically more subdued in color but develop increased contrast and beauty as they mature.

In the wild, this species inhabits deeper rocky habitats where it spends much of its time cruising along rock structures in search of small invertebrates and other food sources. In the aquarium, the Blue Otter adapts well to a varied omnivorous diet consisting of quality cichlid pellets, frozen foods, and occasional vegetable-based supplements.

Despite its large adult size of 8–9 inches, the Blue Otter is generally considered only mildly aggressive compared to many Malawi cichlids. It can be maintained with other similarly sized haps and peacocks provided adequate swimming space and territory are available. Aquariums with rocky formations, open swimming areas, hard alkaline water, and stable conditions will encourage the best coloration and behavior.

Like many Lake Malawi haps, the Blue Otter is a maternal mouthbrooder. After spawning, the female collects and incubates the eggs in her mouth until the fry are fully developed and ready to be released.
