Insignus Cichlid

General Information & Care

The Insignus Cichlid is a popular African Hap cichlid with white markings along its magnificent and electrifying blue body. These cichlids need plenty of space in a tank to swim and hide-out, and they thrive with some grass or vegetation at the bottom of the aquarium. Beautiful and aggressive, these fish will feed on smaller prey- including their own species- if given an opportunity, due to this breed’s piscivorous nature.

Cichlids are an excellent addition to a home aquarium, and with over 1,600 different species of cichlids available widely, aquarists have many options. When adopting these cichlids for a home aquarium, make sure to seek out captive-bred fish to help protect wildlife, while also looking out for the wellbeing of the other fish in the tank.

Some other things to know about the Insignus Cichlid include the following:

• Size: Around 10” long, typically.
• Habitat: Insignus cichlids originate from Lake Malawi, Africa.
• Temperature: Warm water, from mid-70s to 80s, Fahrenheit. Water pH should range 7.5-8.4.
• Pairings: Pair with Victorian Haps, Malawi Haps, and Malawi Peacocks, particularly Blue Dolphin Haps.
• Diet: Like many cichlids, Insignus do well on a fish flake or pellet diet.

Insignus cichlids are an aggressive species, so be careful when pairing or adding fish to an aquarium. Insignus cichlids get along with other cichlids- but choose males.
