Blue dolphin are located throughout lake Malawi, as well as in lake Malombe. Here, they can be found following Rostratus, lateristriga, and praeorbitalis scavenging in the sand for food.
This fish requires a little patience for it to gain it’s full color, but waiting for it is worth while. The true blue coloration does not start to appear until they are around 2” inches, some fry will have a yellow-orangish tint to their anal fin adding a little bit of color. Once the blue starts to come in this fades out.
Because the Blue Dolphin is a scavenger, primarily eating crustaceans, in the wild you will want to feed a good protein diet. Here we feed them our beef heart flakes with the occasional treat of frozen brine shrimp and blood worms.
This fish will get to be around 9” inches when full grown. A minimum tank size of 100 gallons or larger is recommended.
