Specialist aquarium and field catalogs keep the undescribed star-spotted Tanzania form under the provisional name Placidochromis sp. “phenochilus tanzania” and manage it separately from nominal P. phenochilus at Mdoka. This is a useful lineage convention, not a formal species description.
The convention matters especially for Live Fish Direct because both lines appear in the catalog. Keeping the names separate protects the distinction the products are meant to preserve without claiming a formally demonstrated species boundary.
Makonde and the open sand

Captive breeding can maintain the Tanzania form separately, supply aquarium demand, and preserve the adult spotted pattern while taxonomic work continues. The correct “sp.” label protects the fish better than a false certainty would.
