Red Shoulder Severum

Description

The Red Shoulder Severum (Heros sp. Rotkeil), also known as the Rotkeil Severum, is a beautiful and popular cichlid species native to the rivers of South America. This striking fish is best known for the vivid red coloration on its shoulders, contrasting with its yellow-green body, which gives it a distinguished and elegant appearance. Mature males typically display more intense red and green hues, while females tend to have slightly more muted tones. The Red Shoulder Severum can grow up to 8-10 inches in length, making it a larger species suitable for spacious aquariums.

Despite their size, Red Shoulder Severums are relatively peaceful compared to other cichlids, making them a popular choice for community tanks with similarly sized tankmates. They thrive in well-maintained aquariums with soft, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.0-7.2) and a temperature range of 75-82°F. They appreciate a tank setup with driftwood, rocks, and planted areas, but they may occasionally dig up plants, so hardy species or artificial plants are often preferred.

These fish are omnivorous and enjoy a varied diet of high-quality flakes, pellets, as well as vegetables like spinach and peas, alongside live or frozen foods such as bloodworms or brine shrimp.
