Description

The Orange Cap Hap (Otopharynx auromarginatus “Orange Cap”) is one of the most attractive members of the Otopharynx genus. Found throughout Lake Malawi, this species inhabits intermediate zones where rocky structures transition into sandy areas. Its striking appearance features a vivid orange or golden cap atop the head that contrasts beautifully with the iridescent blue coloration displayed by mature males.

As adults, males develop increasingly intense coloration and become true centerpiece fish in African cichlid displays. Females and juveniles are generally more subdued but retain the graceful body shape and active swimming behavior that make this species so appealing.

The Orange Cap Hap is considered more peaceful than many Malawi haps, though mature males may show mild territorial behavior, particularly during breeding periods. They are typically well suited for community setups containing peacocks, other peaceful haplochromines, and similarly sized African cichlids. Providing plenty of swimming space along with rock formations for territory definition helps maintain harmony within the aquarium.

In the wild, this species feeds opportunistically on a variety of food sources, making it an adaptable omnivore in captivity. A diet consisting of high-quality cichlid pellets, frozen foods, and occasional vegetable-based supplements will support healthy growth and vibrant coloration.

Like many Lake Malawi cichlids, the Orange Cap Hap is a maternal mouthbrooder. After spawning, the female carries and protects the fertilized eggs in her mouth until the fry are fully developed and ready to be released.

Combining brilliant coloration, manageable temperament, and impressive adult size, the Orange Cap Hap is a fantastic addition for hobbyists seeking a vibrant and elegant Lake Malawi show fish.
