Description

Norman’s Lampeye Killifish (Poropanchax normani) are a classic nano fish from West Africa, beloved for their unmistakable iridescent blue crescent above each eye that appears to glow under aquarium lighting. This unique feature makes them especially striking in planted tanks with darker substrates and floating plants.

Reaching a maximum size of about 1.5 inches, these fish are peaceful, fast-moving, and highly social. They feel most secure and display their best color and behavior when kept in groups of six or more, where they school actively in the upper and mid water levels.

Lampeyes thrive in heavily planted aquariums with dense stem plants, floating cover like duckweed or frogbit, and gentle flow that mimics their natural slow-moving river habitats. A tight-fitting lid is essential, as they are capable jumpers.

They are adaptable and hardy, preferring warm water (73–78°F) with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.5–7.0), but they adjust well to most stable community tank conditions. A 10-gallon tank or larger is ideal for a small group.

Feeding is easy—these omnivores readily accept micro-pellets, flakes, frozen foods, and live options such as baby brine shrimp, daphnia, and microworms. A varied diet helps enhance their shimmer and overall vitality.

Norman’s Lampeye Killifish are also easy to breed, scattering eggs among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops. Fry are tiny but grow well on baby brine shrimp and other micro-foods.
