Description

The Copadichromis Azureus cichlid belongs to a large family of fish that are native to Africa. These cichlids, whose males are a stunning, almost iridescent blue, belong to a tribe of Haplochromis cichlids, or hap cichlids. In the wild, this fish is found in a deep lake and needs a large, fresh water tank to thrive. It is peaceable and gets on well with other fish. If other Copadichromis Azureus fish are placed in the tank, they’ll tend to school. They prefer water that is somewhat alkaline with a pH of 7.8 to 8.2. The ideal water temperature is between 77 and 82.4 degrees Fahrenheit, and the water should be medium hard.

The male Azureus cichlid grows to about six and a half inches in length, while the female, who is silver and has three black spots on her flanks, is about five inches long. Juvenile fish resemble the females, but the males start to take on their brilliant blue color when they’re about eight months old. The fish lives about five to six years.
