Description

The Neolamprologus brichardi, commonly known as the Brichardi Cichlid or Princess of Burundi, is a striking species native to the rocky shorelines of Lake Tanganyika in Africa. This cichlid is renowned for its unique appearance and fascinating social behaviors, making it a popular choice among cichlid enthusiasts.

Key Features:

  • Striking Appearance: The Brichardi Cichlid is known for its elegant, elongated body with a pointed snout and long flowing fins. Its body is adorned with a creamy white to light blue color, accented by a series of vertical lines and distinctive lyre-shaped tail fin. The striking appearance is complemented by blue or yellow highlights on the fins.
  • Social Behavior: Known for its intricate social structure, Neolamprologus brichardi forms colonies in the wild. In the aquarium, they exhibit fascinating social behaviors, including cooperative breeding and territory defense. These cichlids thrive in groups, making them an excellent choice for aquarists interested in observing complex social interactions.
  • Ideal Tank Environment: A tank of at least 30 gallons is recommended, with plenty of rocky structures and crevices for hiding and establishing territories. Optimal water conditions include a pH of 8.0-9.0 and temperatures between 75-82°F (24-28°C). Strong filtration and regular water changes are essential to maintain water quality.
  • Diet and Feeding: In the wild, Neolamprologus brichardi are omnivores, feeding on small invertebrates and algae. In captivity, they thrive on a diet of high-quality flakes, pellets, and occasional live or frozen foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms.
  • Breeding: This species is a substrate spawner, with females laying eggs in caves or crevices. Both parents and often other colony members guard the eggs and fry, demonstrating strong parental care and cooperative breeding behavior. Providing a stable environment with adequate hiding spots can encourage breeding behavior.

Care Level: Intermediate – Requires specific water conditions and a well-structured tank environment to thrive.

Compatibility: Best kept with other peaceful Tanganyikan cichlids or similarly tempered species. Avoid housing them with aggressive or significantly larger fish.
