Zebra Lobster

$35

The Zebra crayfish, a standout species in the Cherax genus, is celebrated for its striking coloration. Originating from New Guinea’s lakes, rivers, and streams, it was first documented in 2008. As one of the largest freshwater crayfish species, it’s less aggressive compared to the Procambarus alleni (Electric Blue Crayfish). Suitable for almost any freshwater aquarium, these crayfish are hardy, active, and beneficial for tank cleanliness. Ideal for larger tanks of 30 gallons or more, they shouldn’t be housed in smaller aquariums due to their size. With proper care, they can live up to 3-4 years.

For those considering cohabiting them with other crayfish, large fish, or invertebrates, a well-landscaped tank with ample hiding spots is essential. This is particularly important during their vulnerable molting phase. It’s also normal for them to consume their exoskeleton post-molt.

Description

Scientific Name: Cherax peknyi

Common Names: Zebra Lobster, Zebra Crayfish

Origin: Cherax peknyi is native to freshwater habitats in Papua New Guinea.

Tank Requirements:

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 30 gallons is recommended for a single Zebra Lobster. They need ample space due to their size and territorial nature.
  • Water Parameters: The ideal water temperature is between 72-82°F (22-28°C). The pH should be maintained in the range of 6.5 to 7.5, with moderate hardness.
  • Substrate: A mixture of fine gravel and larger rocks is suitable, allowing for areas where the crayfish can hide and explore.
  • Decoration: Include hiding spots like caves, driftwood, and rock formations. They enjoy spaces where they can retreat and feel secure.

Diet:

  • Zebra Lobsters are omnivorous and will eat a variety of foods. Their diet can include specially formulated crayfish pellets, vegetables, and occasional protein sources like fish or shrimp pellets. They may also consume detritus and algae in the tank.

Behavior and Compatibility:

  • They can be territorial and may show aggression towards other bottom-dwelling tank mates. It’s advisable to keep them in a species-specific tank or with fish that swim in higher levels of the tank and are too large to be considered prey.
  • They are not suitable for planted tanks as they can dig up and consume plants.

Breeding:

  • Breeding Zebra Lobsters in captivity can be challenging. They require specific water conditions and a carefully managed environment.
  • The female carries the fertilized eggs under her tail until they hatch into miniature versions of the adults.

General Care:

  • Regular water changes and good filtration are crucial to maintain water quality.
  • Monitor water parameters regularly to ensure they remain within the ideal range.

Lifespan: With proper care, Zebra Lobsters can live up to 5 years or more in captivity.
