Description

Nyassachromis boadzulu
Bring the beauty of Lake Malawi straight to your tank with the Nyassachromis boadzulu, a peaceful yet striking cichlid known for its elegant coloration and graceful presence. Native to the rocky and sandy shores of Boadzulu Island, this species is a must-have for any aquarist looking to add something rare and refined to their African cichlid collection.

While females and juveniles may appear understated, adult males develop a shimmering display of blues and subtle purples that truly come alive under aquarium lighting. Unlike many Mbuna, Boadzulu cichlids have a calm temperament and swim gracefully through the mid-to-upper levels of the tank, bringing a sense of balance and serenity to your aquatic environment.

This species is best suited for tanks 55 gallons or larger. Nyassachromis boadzulu gets along well with other peaceful Haps and non-aggressive tank mates. It’s best to avoid keeping them with overly dominant or aggressive fish, as that can suppress their natural behavior and coloration.

They thrive in warm, alkaline water with a stable pH between 7.8 and 8.6, and a temperature range of 76 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit. A soft sand substrate, scattered rockwork, and plenty of open swimming space will closely mimic their natural habitat and help them feel at home. These fish aren’t overly demanding, but they do appreciate clean, well-filtered water and consistency in care.

Nyassachromis boadzulu are omnivores that enjoy a varied diet. Offer high-quality cichlid pellets or flakes as a staple, and supplement with occasional treats like brine shrimp, daphnia, or spirulina-based foods to keep their colors vibrant and their health in peak condition.

On average, they reach about 4.5 to 6 inches in length and live between five to eight years in a healthy environment. Their temperament is peaceful to semi-aggressive, and their care level is considered moderate—ideal for intermediate to advanced hobbyists.

This is not your average African cichlid. Nyassachromis boadzulu offers elegance, calm energy, and rarity in one beautiful package. Whether you’re building a Lake Malawi biotope or simply looking to add something truly special to your display, this species is a standout choice.
