Description

The Melanotaenia sikuensis, commonly referred to as the Siku Creek Rainbowfish or “Isim” Rainbowfish, is a striking freshwater fish that presents a fascinating addition to the aquarium hobby. This species was first collected from Siku Creek and is characterized by its overall yellowish body color. The males can be particularly eye-catching with a continuous blue-violet midlateral line running from the pectoral fins to the middle sections and further along the caudal section. The pectoral fins are translucent, while the remaining fins are dark yellow. Interestingly, there’s no marginal stripe on the dorsal and anal fins, and a faint blue blotch extends from the pectoral fin base to the middle of the anal fin.

In terms of habitat, Melanotaenia sikuensis was found in several clear water creeks and lagoons around the village of Isim, within the Muturi River catchment. These environments are typical of a karstic aquatic system. In terms of size, the largest specimen collected measured more than 12 cm in total length, and the coloration of aquarium specimens can be quite variable, displaying either yellow or orange hues.

As for care in the aquarium, they are generally hardy and easy to care for. They are peaceful and active, with males frequently displaying bright iridescent strips in stunning visual displays. These fish can grow to at least 4.7 inches, maybe larger, and thrive in a tank that is at least 4 feet long, especially since they are rapid swimmers. They require “soft” foods like flakes, frozen foods, or Repashy, and if pellets are fed, they should be very small or softened. A lid is highly recommended for the tank since they can jump.
