The Aulonocara Sp. German Red is line bred in Germany to get its vibrant red color. This species is sexually dimorphic. This means that as it matures the male German Red Peacock Cichlids develop a bright red body with a metallic blue underside and face, while the females are a dull grey brown with only a hint of brown on their dorsal fin and belly.
A relatively small fish, the Aulonocara Sp. German Red can grow up to 6" and can be kept in a tank with others of its kind. They can be peaceful to mildly aggressive and eat a carnivorous diet. They are sustained on a high-protein diet such as plankton based flakes mixed with other proteins such as live blood worms. Even though the German Red Peacock is not native to Lake Malawi, they still require a certain alkalinity similar to the lake if they are to be kept in a tank. The pH should be between 7.8 - 8.6 and the temperature of the water should stay between 78 - 82°F.
