The figure 8 puffer fish (Tetraodon biocellatus), native to Southeast Asia, primarily inhabits slow-moving rivers and brackish waters in countries like Borneo, Sumatra, and Malaysia. Its name comes from the unique figure-eight-shaped patterns on its back, making it easily recognizable and popular among aquarists. Growing up to 3 inches (7.5 cm), the figure 8 puffer has a round, compact body with striking black and yellow patterns, giving it a charming appearance.

Unlike many other puffer species, which can be aggressive and territorial, the figure 8 puffer is generally considered more peaceful, though it can still exhibit nippy behavior, especially toward tank mates. It thrives in slightly brackish water with a specific gravity of 1.005-1.008 and a pH level between 7.5 and 8.5. Proper tank conditions and regular water changes are essential for its health, as they are sensitive to poor water quality.

Diet is a critical aspect of caring for this species, as their continuously growing teeth require regular wear to prevent overgrowth. A varied diet of crunchy foods such as snails, shellfish, and crustaceans helps maintain dental health. They can also eat bloodworms and other meaty foods, but offering hard-shelled prey is essential to keep their teeth in check.

While figure 8 puffers do not inflate as a defense mechanism as often as some other species, they still have the ability to do so when threatened. However, this behavior should not be encouraged, as it can stress the fish. Their curious and active nature, combined with their vivid markings, makes them a fascinating addition to a specialized tank for intermediate aquarists.
