The Tiger Silver Dollar (Metynnis fasciatus), also known as the Striped Silver Dollar, offers a distinctive alternative to the traditional silver dollar. Its deep, coin-shaped body shines with a metallic silver-green finish while a series of vertical bands creates its characteristic “tiger” pattern. The intensity of these markings can change with lighting, maturity, and mood. Mature males may also develop red or orange fin accents and an elongated, curved anal fin.

Native to the Amazon River drainage of South America, Tiger Silver Dollars are active midwater swimmers that look especially impressive moving together as a school. They should be kept in groups of at least five or six, with plenty of unobstructed swimming room. A 75-gallon aquarium can accommodate a developing group, while 100 gallons or larger is recommended for long-term adult care. Driftwood, smooth rocks, subdued lighting, strong filtration, and a securely fitted lid create an ideal environment.

This is a generally peaceful species that can be housed with similarly sized community fish. Tiger Silver Dollars can be skittish when kept alone or in an exposed aquarium, but a proper school and a thoughtfully decorated tank will help them feel secure.

Although technically omnivorous, their diet should be primarily plant-based. Offer quality spirulina flakes or pellets, algae wafers, and occasional fresh vegetables such as zucchini, spinach, or romaine. Frozen brine shrimp and similar foods can be offered sparingly for variety. Like other silver dollars, they are enthusiastic plant eaters and may consume or damage most live aquarium plants.
