About the Albino Sulfurhead Lithobates Albino
The Albino Sulfurhead Lithobates is a selectively line-bred form of Otopharynx lithobates developed from the Aristo Yellow Blaze Zimbabwe Rock line. Although it descends from a yellow-blaze line, this albino form develops a striking platinum-white blaze across the head and dorsal fin.
Its pale albino body, pink-red eyes, and brilliant platinum crest create an appearance unlike the traditionally colored Sulfurhead Lithobates. Mature males generally develop the strongest blaze and more elongated fins, while females are usually smaller and more subtly colored.
Young fish may not display their complete adult coloration immediately. The platinum blaze and differences between males and females become more noticeable as the fish mature.
Heritage and Natural Habitat
Otopharynx lithobates is native to Lake Malawi, where wild populations inhabit rocky areas, caves, and crevices around offshore islands and reefs. The Zimbabwe Rock population became especially popular in the aquarium hobby for its dramatic head and dorsal blaze.
The Albino Sulfurhead Lithobates is a captive-developed color form rather than a naturally occurring albino population. Careful line breeding from Aristo Yellow Blaze Zimbabwe Rock stock produced its distinctive albino body and platinum-white blaze.
Tank Setup & Care
Mature males can approach 6–6.5 inches, with females generally remaining smaller. A 55-gallon aquarium is a practical minimum, while 75 gallons or larger is preferred for a group or mixed peacock and hap aquarium.
Create a rocky layout with caves and sheltered areas while leaving plenty of open swimming room. Sand or fine gravel can be used for the substrate. Moderate lighting and shaded retreats will help the platinum coloration stand out while giving the fish places to feel secure.
Strong filtration, good oxygenation, and regular water changes are important for maintaining the clean and stable conditions required by Lake Malawi cichlids.
Water Conditions
Temperature: 76–82°F
pH: 7.8–8.6
Stable, alkaline water is more important than achieving one exact measurement. Sudden changes in temperature or water chemistry should be avoided.
Diet & Feeding
We recommend our locally produced flake foods as part of a balanced diet. Plankton Gold Flake makes an excellent staple for peacocks and haps, while Tropical Flake or Spirulina Flake can be rotated in for additional variety.
The diet can also be supplemented with occasional frozen foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, or krill. Feed small portions once or twice daily and avoid allowing uneaten food to collect in the aquarium.
A varied diet and consistently clean water will support healthy growth, overall condition, and the clearest possible platinum-white coloration.
Behavior & Tankmates
Albino Sulfurhead Lithobates are relatively peaceful compared with many Lake Malawi cichlids, although mature males may become territorial when displaying or breeding.
Compatible choices from our Peacock & Hap collection include:
Red Shoulder Peacock
Copadichromis Azureus
Deep Water Hap
Lethrinops Intermedius
Choose tankmates of a similar size and mild-to-moderate temperament. Avoid extremely aggressive mbuna and large predatory haps that may intimidate or injure them.
For breeding, a species-only aquarium is recommended to protect the identity and purity of this carefully developed line. One male with two to four females also helps distribute the male’s attention.
Breeding
The Albino Sulfurhead Lithobates is a maternal mouthbrooder. After spawning, the female collects the fertilized eggs and carries them in her mouth for approximately three weeks before releasing the developed fry.
The male may defend a cave or rocky spawning territory, while the holding female often becomes reclusive. Provide several protected areas where females can escape attention from the male and other tankmates.
Maintaining accurate breeding records and keeping the line separate from other Otopharynx lithobates varieties will help preserve its platinum-white blaze, albino coloration, and Aristo Yellow Zimbabwe Rock ancestry.
