The Hemitilapia oxyrhyncha, commonly known as the Giant Hap Cichlid, is a striking species native to Lake Malawi in Africa. This cichlid is notable for its unique body shape and impressive size, making it a fascinating addition to any large freshwater aquarium.

• Striking Appearance: The Giant Hap Cichlid boasts an elongated body with a pointed snout, giving it a distinctive appearance. Males exhibit vibrant blue and yellow hues, especially during breeding displays, while females are generally more subdued in coloration.
• Active and Territorial: Known for its active and territorial nature, this cichlid requires ample space and well-structured environments. They establish territories and can be aggressive towards other tank mates, particularly during breeding seasons.
• Ideal Tank Environment: A tank of at least 75 gallons is recommended, with plenty of rocks and hiding spots to mimic their natural habitat. Optimal water conditions include a pH of 7.5-8.5 and temperatures between 75-82°F (24-28°C). Strong filtration and regular water changes are essential to maintain water quality.
• Diet and Feeding: In the wild, Hemitilapia oxyrhyncha are omnivores, feeding on algae, small invertebrates, and zooplankton. In captivity, they thrive on a varied diet of high-quality pellets, flakes, and occasional live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia.
• Breeding: This species is a maternal mouthbrooder, with females carrying the fertilized eggs and fry in their mouths for protection until they are ready to be released. Providing a stable environment and proper care can encourage breeding behavior.
