Mpimbwe Black Bee: A Tanganyikan Cichlid Made for Open Water

While many cichlids organize life around a rock or shell, Cyprichromis organize around the moving school and the plankton drifting above Lake Tanganyika's slopes.

A cichlid that lives in the water column

Cyprichromis leptosoma has the slim body and quick, coordinated movement of a fish that spends much of its time away from the bottom. FishBase describes adults gathering off rocky slopes, where schools feed on drifting zooplankton rather than defending a grazing patch.

That open-water life is the key to understanding the fish. It is a cichlid, but it should not be planned like a solitary cave owner. Swimming room, a stable group, and calm tankmates let its natural social rhythm show.

What Mpimbwe Black Bee means

Mpimbwe is a real Lake Tanganyika locality: FishBase occurrence records include Cyprichromis leptosoma from the Mpimbwe Hills area. Black Bee, however, is best treated as an aquarium trade label for this color line rather than a formal scientific rank.

Live Fish Direct keeps the full catalog name because it helps aquarists distinguish the line they are buying. The scientific claim remains deliberately narrower: Cyprichromis leptosoma sold under the Mpimbwe Black Bee aquarium name.

Color is strongest when the group feels secure

Adult males provide the strongest tri-color display, while females and younger fish are more restrained. Shipping, a new aquarium, or an unsettled social group can temporarily mute the colors that made the line famous.

A generous group spreads attention and gives males room to display without turning every encounter into a chase. Rockwork can frame the tank and offer retreat, but open horizontal water should remain part of the design.

Maternal mouthbrooding in open water

Cyprichromis are maternal mouthbrooders. After spawning, the female carries developing young in her mouth, an unusually intimate form of parental protection for a fish associated with open water.

At the farm, the goal is not to force finished male color onto every juvenile. It is to select alert, well-formed fish from a healthy group and let maturity, social confidence, and good care complete the display.

Common questions

Tri-color Cyprichromis leptosoma "Mpimbwe Black Bee" FAQ

Clear answers to common questions about this fish.

Is Mpimbwe Black Bee a separate species?

It is presented here as a locality and aquarium trade form of Cyprichromis leptosoma, not as a separately described species.

Should Cyprichromis leptosoma be kept alone?

No. It is a social, gregarious fish. A thoughtfully sized group and open swimming space better match its natural behavior than keeping one isolated individual.

Do females show the same tri-color pattern as males?

Mature males normally show the strongest color. Females and juveniles are generally subtler, and recently shipped fish may need time to regain full display color.

What does Cyprichromis leptosoma eat?

Wild fish feed primarily on drifting zooplankton. In an aquarium, appropriately sized foods offered through the water column fit that feeding style.
