Description
The Cynotilapia afra “White Top Hara” from Gallireya Reef, recognized for its distinctive appearance and behavior, is a notable variant within the African cichlid community.
- The Cynotilapia sp. ‘hara’, commonly referred to as “White Top Hara”, was initially given a provisional name by Ad Konings in 2004, recognizing its unique characteristics and habitat around Gallireya Reef, located near the village of Hara on the shores of Lake Malawi.
- This species falls under the Cichlidae family and the Pseudocrenilabrinae sub-family.
Physical and Behavioral Characteristics:
- Noted for its smaller size among cichlids, Cynotilapia sp. ‘hara’ exhibits a striking powder blue coloration in males and cobalt blue in females and young.
- Male fish display significant changes in their melanin pattern as they age, often leading to a reduction in dark stripes and a more pronounced powder blue hue.
- This species is recognized for its conical teeth, a trait shared among zebra types of mbuna, which are a group of rock-dwelling cichlids from Lake Malawi.
Habitat and Feeding Habits:
- Found in the unique habitat of Gallireya Reef, the rocks in this region are spread around the lake bottom and have a volcanic origin.
- The Cynotilapia sp. ‘hara’ primarily feeds on plankton, exhibiting a behavior distinct from other zebra-like mbuna species.
Breeding and Conservation:
- This species is a maternal mouth-brooder, with breeding involving intricate displays and territorial behavior by males.
- Due to its restricted range and popularity, it is considered to be vulnerable despite not being evaluated by the IUCN.
Aquarium Care and Popularity:
- The “White Top Hara” gained significant popularity after its description, becoming a sought-after species for both beginner and experienced aquarists.
- It requires larger tanks and specific water conditions similar to other African Great Lakes cichlids.
Scientific Observation and References:
- Further details and scientific insights can be found in publications by Ad Konings and Patrick Tawil, who have extensively studied this species.
