The Cobalt Blue Zebra is a gorgeous fish. Their deep blue vertical stripes coordinate well with their light blue bodies. Males of the species also develop several orange-colored spots on their rear fin that provide a striking contrast to the shades of blue. Upon reaching adulthood, these fish are typically 5-6 inches long.
A good strain of Cobalt Blue can be hard to find. Rest assured that my strain is excellent. The males are a rich blue with no stripes and the females can be hard to tell apart because they are so blue.
Cobalt Blue Zebra Cichlids hail from the sandy shallows of lake Malawi in Africa, so they will thrive in a tank that provides plenty of small, loose rocks or gravel for burrowing. They should also have several places to hide; these lake Malawi Mbuna can be territorial and should have rock structures they can claim as their own. They also need plenty of room for swimming, so a tank that's 50 gallons or larger is ideal. As for water conditions, aim to keep their environment at a temperature of 75 to 80 degrees, with a pH balance of around 9.0.
Feeding Your Metriaclima Callainos
The Cobalt Blue Zebra Cichlid needs a vegetable-based diet; flakes, pellets or frozen foods all work equally well. Make sure go easy on meat additions like brine shrimp or plankton. These protein-rich foods should be used as an occasional treat rather than a main component of the Blue Zebra diet.
